What is Diatomaceous Earth and Its Benefits

Diatomaceous Earth is a natural and cheap way to control parasites that may have found their way to your dog. This non-toxic white powder comes from crushed marine life fossils, when looking through a microscope the powder resembles tiny shards of glass. While it is harmless to insects and parasites, it will cause zero harm to animals. If you don’t want to purchase expensive chemicals, give this natural alternative a shot!

How It Works

This natural powder doesn’t work the same as the products you buy from the vet. Instead of poisoning the parasites like other products, it works manually. Because the powder is actually similar to shards of glass when it comes in contact with a parasite it cuts through the protective layer that keeps it alive. Without this layer the parasite will dry up and die, it does the same thing to larvae that have not hatched yet.

What Does It Work On?

Diatomaceous Earth will work on internal and external parasites. If your dog has worms you can add this powder into their food. Just be sure that you are using the food grade variety. This can be found at health food stores and online stores. Add it to your dog's food for at least 30 days to ensure all worms and larvae have been killed off. It will take care of roundworms, pinworms, and hookworms because these are worms that are found in the intestines. It will not kill heartworm. If your dog has fleas, mites, or lice Diatomaceous Earth can be used to kill them off. Sprinkle the powder on your dog's bed and on all carpets in the house.

Pest Control

You can also use Diatomaceous Earth for any outside pest control. If you have a garden and you are looking for a natural way to keep insects out, this will work. It won’t harm useful earthworms but it will keep out insects that may ruin your plants. This includes ticks! It won’t harm your dog or any wildlife that comes across your garden. You can sprinkle it in and around your garden as well as mix it with the water you use in the garden.
